Benefit For Acadiana Rainbow Society Of The Deaf

very second Friday of every month Rubyfruit Jungle, 640 Frenchmen St., is holding an All You Can Drink Beer Bust, from 8 pm til midnight, as a benefit for Acadiana Rainbow Society of the Deaf for only $5.
And the fellas in the Rainbow Society have a reason to want plenty of people to come and enjoy the beer busts and drink hearty as they are already well into planning the 1999 Rainbow Alliance Of The Deaf Conference which they'll be hosting in New Orleans June 15-20, 1999.
New Faces In Cast Of The Boys In The Band
Veteran director George Patterson, deep into rehearsals for the Southern Decadence production of Mart Crowley's scathingly funny classic gay play, The Boys In The Band, being produced by the Krewe of Petronius, in association with Southern Repertory Theatre, as a fundraiser, has amassed a cast of new faces, and one known one, for the production.
The one known, and endearing, face is that of Harold Evans, whose list of credits, both local and national, is most impressive. Mr. Evans recreates the role of Bernard. Playing Michael, the angst-ridden lead in whose apartment a bizarre birthday party unfolds, will be Gordon Randolph, last seen five years ago in the krewe's acclaimed production of Charles Ludlam's Camille. His best friend, Donald, will be played by UNO acting student Curtis Hunt, while Brett Boyle portrays the "ugly, pockmarked Jew fairy" Harold, the birthday boy. Robin Malta, last seen in the krewe's production of Vampire Lesbians Of Sodom, will portray the flighty, funny Emory, whose birthday present to Harold is a male hustler, portrayed by Johnny Lopez. Rounding out the cast of nine are Ken Capone and Ted Butler, playing the warring lovers, Hank and Larry and Richard Klaus as the enigmatic party crasher. The impressive, multi-level set is being designed by Glen Mehne while Phill Harmon designs the lighting.
The Boys In the Band will have only six performances at the Southern Repertory Theatre, 3rd Level, One Canal Place: Fri. & Sat., Aug. 22 & 23, 8 pm; Sun., Aug. 23, 2 pm; and, Fri. - Sun., Aug. 29, 30 & 31, 8 pm.

Sojourn At Lazarus
Project Lazarus is pleased to announce "Sojourn at Lazarus," two new programs for People with AIDS and their caregivers. The Caregiver's Respite Program offers up to two weeks of care for a person with AIDS whose caregiver is temporarily unavailable due to conflicting personal or professional needs. The Convalescent Program offers up to two weeks of care for people with AIDS who are discharged from a hospital but who are not yet able to care for themselves independently.
The Caregivers Respite Program offers AIDS caregivers a break from those responsibilities so they can take care of other needs, including taking a vacation or time to rest. The Convalescent Program offers care to people with AIDS so they can recuperate after a hospitalization before returning to independent living.
Men and women with AIDS who are over 18 years of age and their caregivers are eligible at NO cost to the client, who receives prepared meals, laundry service, transportation to appointments, help with medication schedules and assistance with all activities.

Wood Enterprises' Celebrates SD XXV
Southern Decadence is upon us and Wood Enterprises kicked off the season in grand style Friday, Aug. 1 when reigning Grand Marshall XXIV Wayne White named Miss Love to become Southern Decadence Grand Marshall XXV at the Coronation Party held at Cafe Lafitte, overseen by Mistresses of Ceremony, Ms. Fly and Smurf. The joint was jumping with excitement and anticipation.
On Thurs., Aug. 7, the Grand Marshall's Press Party will be held in the Queen's Head Pub for the second "straight" year. The new Grand Marshall will meet the press and discuss his plans for Southern Decadence. Last year's Press Party drew close to seventy-five people. It's a private affair so make sure you get an invitation from Grand Marshal Miss Love.
One of the major events during Southern Decadence is the Miss High Hair Awards Ceremony held at Good Friends Bar. It was started in 1990 as an added event for people to show off their extraordinary wigs, wiglets and falls. The winner is selected by the audience, so remember, the bigger the hair, the louder the applause. The Bronze Barbie is the coveted "Oscar" of this hilarious event. Varla Jean Merman, now performing in New York City, won the award in 1991 with the Empire State Building as her design. So, the sky's the limit!
The contest will be held at Good Friends Bar, 740 Dauphine St., Southern Decadence Sunday, Aug. 31. Registration begins at 1 pm and the ceremony commences at 5 pm. The contest is open to anyone-all you need is high hair! For the third year in a row, Rawhide2010 will be selling its Limited Edition Souther Decadence tee shirts. In past years these have been very popular as collector's items as a very limited number are printed each year.

Five Serial Murderers Of Gay People
Still At Large
While the threat of Andrew Cunanan is gone, many wonder if law enforcement will now step up their efforts to find five serial killers of gay men and transgender people still at large in the U.S.. According to a 1994 report released by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP), a group committed to ending hate crimes against the lesbian and gay community, five serial murderers who have targeted primarily gay men and transgender people still remain at large. In Atlanta at least six male-to-female transgender people have been shot dead since 1987. Since 1991 six gay men have been murdered and dismembered in the New York area. In Denver, four gay men have been stabbed to death, while in Virginia, nine African-American male-to-female transgender people have been found dead. In total, these five serial killers have been linked to the deaths of at least 35 people.
"While law enforcement and the media debate whether Cunanan was a 'serial' or 'spree' killer," said Jeffrey Montgomery of the NCAVP, "the deaths of at least 35 people at the hands of other murderers remain unsolved. We hope the lesson learned from the past few weeks is that law enforcement needs to work hand-in-hand with the community to put an end to anti-gay bias crimes."
