Burnett's Daughter Out?

An unconfirmed report in the current edition of the Florida-based tabloid Globe--not to be confused with the more distinguished Boston Globe--describes comic Carol Burnett and her daughter, actress Carrie Hamilton, standing proudly by as younger daughter singer Erin performed and announced herself to be a Lesbian at a huge and lavish Gay and Lesbian Beverly Hills fund-raiser. Erin was married to singer Trae Carlson in 1996 and had son Zachary in 1997, but filed for divorce earlier this year. The Globe has her in a relationship with a Florida woman named Angie.

Return to Paradise

With universal acclaim for the work of openly Lesbian star Anne Heche and unanimous agreement that her on-screen "chemistry" with co-star Vince Vaughn is powerful, lest anyone's doubts of her ability to play straight were not satisfied by Six Days, Seven Nights with old-enough-to-be-her-father Harrison Ford, Return to Paradise is now in theatres. Critical consensus on the film otherwise seems to run about three-stars-out-of-four, with complaints about a hyper-plotted script and some disagreement as to whether or not the audience leaves the theater contemplating the moral question of how far to go for a friend.

International Censors Relent

Wong Kar-wai's acclaimed Happy Together will get its first showing in South Korea, after the government finally lifted a ban on the film; that leaves Singapore the last place it cannot be shown. The not acclaimed by anyone "Makin' Whoopee!" which includes one Lesbian sex scene amidst heaping helpings of hetero whoopee, has been given an RI 8 rating by the British Board of Film Classification for video distribution through licensed sex shops, indicating the BBFC's new looser approach to RI 8; the same film had been left unrated in April, leaving it not legal for distribution. Having found it to be not obscene, the BBFC's Video Appeals Committee offered this encomium: "It may offend or disgust, but it is unlikely to deprave and corrupt that proportion of the public who are likely to view it."

Bride's Nightmare

We're now in what news folks call "the silly season," when there's so little happening that darn near anything gets passed around; and while we found the following hard to credit and offer it solely for its entertainment value, the Athens News Agency was willing to say it twice and Reuters picked it up. It seems that after a long and stormy relationship, a man and woman on Crete had named Aug. 8 to be their wedding day. As per tradition, they celebrated separately the night before. But the bride's friends wanted a look at the wedding dress, so they all trooped back to the couple's home. Not only did they reportedly discover the groom in passionate embrace with his male friend-he was wearing the bridal gown. The stricken bride had to be hospitalized. [NewsPlanet]

Christian Intersex Support Group Formed

Intersex Support Group International announces a new ministry based on the True Love of Jesus Christ for intersexuals. I.S.G.I. has been established from the recognition within mainstream Evangelical Christian churches of birth anomalies labeled "Intersex" or "Hermaphrodite". Based in Portland,OR, the I.S.G.I. grew out of the godly response of one Conservative Baptist Church as they studied, prayed, and responded with compassion to an adult intersexual within their congregation. From the basic discernment that "being born a hermaphrodite is not sin," to understanding the complex web of life thrust upon the intersexual, I.S.G.I. has blossomed to become an oasis of Christian love and hope.

For too long, the unyielding demands of people claiming the name of Christ have over-ridden the real love and understanding of our Creator and Lord. Acknowledged in The Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, persons born with ambiguous or non-existent genitalia have been promised special blessing, (Isaiah 56:3-5), as well as understanding of their peculiar relationship in a two-gendered society, (Matthew19:11-12).

I.S.G.I. has gathered a highly respected panel of leaders from internationally respected ministries, all serving to keep the lines of hope and support open to intersexuals, their families, and their church communities. The 'Manifesto' of I.S.G.I. has been published at the group's virtual domain on the World Wide Web at www.isgi.org.

In addition to the I.S.G.I. Web site, a counseling network has been established on four continents to provide basic triage of spiritual and emotional conflicts experienced by many who cope with this common life circumstance. (1 in 2000 births) In cooperation with established intersexual activist groups such as ISNA, the Intersex Support Group International has taken the lead in providing insight and understanding toward individuals searching for peace from their Creator.

SF Board Opts for DP Discounts

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Aug. 10 unanimously approved a first-of-its-kind requirement that businesses extend any customer discounts they offer married couples to domestic partners as well. Mayor Willie Brown who called the proposal "the right thing to do," is expected to sign it into law. Openly Gay Supervisor Mark Leno, who introduced the bill, was unable to name a single company in the city where equal discounts were not already offered. Even though this measure has a broader reach into the private sector than San Francisco's pioneering Equal Benefits Ordinance, which affects only the city's contractors, it had the support of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and the Small Business Network, and hardly any opposition from the business community. One business owner noted that couples not officially registered with the city might still qualify for discounts if they can present evidence of a jointly-held bank account or identification bearing both names. Registered couples can present their certificates of registry. This latest step in San Francisco's evolving definition of domestic partnerships is seen by many as an act of defiance against Congressmember Frank Riggs (R-CA), who earlier this month won the House's 214-212 approval for withholding millions in housing funds from the city if it retained the Equal Benefits Ordinance. (Although San Francisco was not actually named in the Congressional measure, it is currently the only city in the country which fit the description of requiring its contractors to extend equal spousal benefits to employees' registered domestic partners.) Riggs explained his attack on San Francisco by saying, "We should not force or coerce [businesses] to adopt policies they find morally objectionable." [from NewsPlanet]
