AS I LAY DYING

Swine Palace Productions begins its '98 season with the American premiere of adapter/director Edward Kemp's production of William Faulkner's classic novel about a poor family's journey across the Deep South to fulfill the last wish of their dying mother. Previously created for the Young Vic Theatre in London, this production will feature New Orleans actor Mark McLaughlin, Cristin Cunningham, J.P. Delahoussaye, Preston Lorio and Tony Marble, among many. Barry Kyle, founding Artistic Director of Swine Palace and Marc Sherrel design the sets; Louis Gagliano, the lighting; Simone C. Williams, the costumes; and, Andre DuBroc is music director. Sept. 3 - 20; Tues. - Fri., 7:30pm, Sat. & Sun., 2pm.

AT THE CLUB TOOT SWEET ON BOURBON STREET

The terrific trio that gave us Daryl's Perils has struck again. With book and lyrics by Ricky Graham and David Cuthbert and music by Harry Mayronne, Jr., and direction by Ricky Graham, a brand-new musical comedy about Bourbon Street entertainers, circa 1958, hits the boards. Starring Becky Allen as Busty Rusty Russell, the Saucy Sophisticate of Song who has organized a Bail Bond Benefit for her SOS fund (Save Our Strippers), and Michael Bennett as Buddy Ray, the erascible emcee of this vaudeville turn, the show features Renee Maxwell as Dixie Lee Barrymore, the Brernhardt of Burlesque, Sean Patterson as My-O-My star Dani Delmar, the dance team of Lothar and Lupe (Roy Haylock, who also doubles as costume designer), with Chris Wecklein, Veronica Giacano, Lara Nelms, Troi Bechet, Amanda Hebert and Phil Blunt as a heckler. Chris Jones does the scenery and lighting. Fri., 8pm; Sat., 6:30pm & 9pm; thru Sept. 5.

THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE

Ty Tracy does his annual Summer Youth Workshop production utilizing the budding talents of the city's younger thespians focusing, this year, on George Abbott's adaptation of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors loaded with one of Rodgers and Hart's more memorable scores ("This Can't Be Love," "Sing For Your Supper" and "Falling In Love With Love"). Leading the cast of over 40 are Robert Edgecombe, Mark Weinberg, Jermaine Keelen, Jason George, Nori Pritchard, Jennifer Carriere, Katy Weatherly, Karen Bienert, Margaret Prat, Chase Kamata and Sarah Stickney. Gloria Fallo is music and vocal director with choreography by Leo Jones, sets and lighting by Phil Wagar and costumes by Bob Bruce. Thurs. - Sat., 8pm; Sun., 2pm, thru Aug. 30.

Cabaret Sauvignon's MENTAL FLOSS

A comedy cabaret that occupies True Brew's cabaret room every Sunday night in Aug. at 8pm and stars Vatican Lokey, Kate Arthurs and Don Blum in their manic "therapy sessions" that illuminate the foibles and flaws of native life in a repertoire of original songs and twisted tunes.

CLASS OF '70SOMETHING

Carl Walker reprises his hit musical revue of songs from the 70s that played this venue two years ago. With musical direction by Jack Fowler, costumes by Roy Haylock and Charlotte Lang and promising a more elaborate set than the original by designer Ron Williams, this edition boasts the return of Wess Hughes, Charlotte Lang and Danon Smith from the original production. The newbies are: Anthony Bailey, Eddie Collins, Randy Juneau, Daniel Morgan, Cynthia Owen (returning to New Orleans) & Dorian Rush. Fri., 8pm; Sat., 6pm & 9pm, thru Aug. 30. FRANCESCA AND PAOLO IN HELL

Magus Magnus premieres his one act play which depicts the famous adulterers of Dante's second circle of hell in conversation after 700 years of torment. Jacob Gaffney directs Courtney Bailey, Eric Illarmo, Amy Woodruff and himself. Weekend of Aug. 28 & 29, 7:30pm.

THE HEIDI CHRONICLES

Written by Wendy Wasserstein, directed by Kimberly Patterson and starring Kathy Taaffe as Heidi Holland, art historian, this comedy's chronicles go from the free and flowery 60s through the end of the materialistic 80s. Others in the cast are Michael P. Cahill, Jack Long, Jennifer Pagan, Royd Anderson, Tracy Hernandez, Wendy LeBlanc & Rebecca Lovett. Sean Stewart does the set; Nykol DeDreu, the lighting. THE ME NOBODY KNOWS

Summer Stages ends its two play season with this soft rock musical collage about growing up in the inner city. Adapted from the writings of New York City kids by Robert Livingston and Herb Shapiro and with music by Gary William Friedman and lyrics by Will Holt, it is co-directed by Julie Condy, Mikko Macchione & Fernand Jackson with Malcolm Lanius, music director and Ron Williams, scenic design. The show features an ensemble cast of 15 young people ranging in age from 12 to 16. Fri. & Sat., 7:30pm; Sun., 3pm, thru Aug. 23.

THE ODD COUPLE

Neil Simon gender-swaps his best comedy about two dysfunctional, middle-aged roomates, the better to add more money-earning life to his annuity. This is a take-off of a take-off. Instead of Oscar and Felix there's Ollie (Sandy Bravender) and Florence (Gia Rabito). This version is directed by Dane Rhodes and features Doris Methe, Theresa Dellucky, Terrell Robinson, Danon Dastague and Glen Gomez. Laura Freeman directs Tom Stoppard's twisted take on Hamlet, from the point of view of these two bumbling minor characters, played by Matthew Snyder and Dave Orsborne, with Bill Lagan as the Player.
