Gay Arts Foundation Accepting New Grant Applications for 1997

nounces it is accepting sub
missions for grants in two different arts disciplines -- Fiction writing and Drama/Music production.
Cash grants will be awarded to individual authors of completed original unpublished Novels, Novellas or Collections of Related Short Stories.
Grants will also be made available to Theatrical and Musical Organizations to assist in the production of Plays, Musicals, Operas, Choral Works, Song Cycles or Orchestral works with texts.
Because of the founders' belief that we can learn from our own past, all works submitted must be based on or inspired by a historical person or event. All submissions must also portray the gay and lesbian lifestyle in a positive manner. NOMA Takes Faberge' Exhibition into New Year

Art rings in 1997 with Faberge
in America, the nation's largest-ever assemblage of nearly 400 bejeweled objects created by Peter Carl Faberge for his prestigious clientele, and the celebration continues when Guest Curator Archduke Dr. Geza von Habsburg returns January 8 to present a pair of Faberge lectures.
Dr. von Habsburg, renown Faberge expert and great-great grandson of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, will use his expertise and intimate knowledge of European royalty and Faberge's creations to paint a fascinating portrait of Peter Carl Faberge, the pre-eminent Russian jeweler and artist. This illustrated lecture will be presented at the Pavilion of the Two Sisters in City Park. Dr. von Habsburg's lecture will be offered at two times, IO a.m. and 2 p.m. Reservations for both lectures and limited and those interested in attending are urged to act quickly. To accommodate the thousands wanting to see Faberge in America, which includes 15 of the famed Imperial Easter eggs, NOMA offers special hours through the end of the exhibition on February 9. Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. with last entry at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are available at NOMA's box office, open Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., and through Ticketmaster. To make sure you have your date with Faberge reserved (tickets are issued for a specific date and time), call Ticketmaster at 504.522.1314 in the Greater New Orleans area, 504.336. 5000 in Baton Rouge and at 1.800.488.5252 anywhere outside Louisiana. Tickets are $1 0 for adults, $9 for seniors ages 65 and up, and $5 for ages 3-17. The free admission program for Thursday mornings is suspended during Faberge in America.
Faberge in America has been organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The exhibition is made possible by FABERGE CO. The New Orleans presentation is made possible by Bank One and Freeport-McMoRan Foundation. The official hotel in New Orleans is the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel.
NOMA is offering more Russian history during December. Lost Russia: Photographs by William Craft Brumfield concentrates on buildings, primarily churches, largely unknown to the West and even in Russia itself These buildings were chronicled by the Tulane University professor during his travels in Russia. The exhibition also remains open through February 9, 1997.
NOMA Box Office Opens, Offers Faberge' Tickets

the New Orleans Museum of Art - to be part of New Orleans' biggest event since Monet: Late Paintings of Giverny from the Musie Marmottan came to town. NOMA's box offices are now open and selling highly sought-after tickets to the blockbuster exhibition Faberge in America. You can't miss these box offices, which were created by Sheriff Charles Foti's Prison Arts Program. The Russian-inspired booths, sporting facades of brick-patterned red topped with colorful, shaped roofs that complement the onion dome towers inside the Museum, help lend a festive air to the exhibition.
NOMA's box offices are open Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. and, like all Faberge ticket outlets, sell tickets for a specific day and time only. The Museum box office accepts Visa, MasterCard and cash. The NOMA box offices do sell tickets for same-day visits based upon availability. Tickets can also be obtained by calling Ticketmaster at 504.522.1314 in New Orleans, 336.5000 in Baton Rouge, and toll-free at 1.800.488.5252 nationwide; or by visiting any Ticketmaster outlet (most take only cash).
Faberge in America is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., through February 9, 1997. However, the last time of entry is 3:30 p.m. in order to allow visitors ample time to view this extensive exhibition of nearly 400 masterpieces, including 15 Imperial Easter eggs, created by Peter Carl Faberge, court jeweler to the last czars of Russia. The Museum Shop, offering eggs of all types among a wide range of Russian and Faberge themed gifts, is open from 9 a.m. until 4:45 p.m.; and the Courtyard Cafe offers gourmet treats from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., with a light lunch served from 11:30 until 2:30.
Residents of the New Orleans area should take seriously the advice to buy tickets now, said Sharon Litwin, NOMA's Assistant Director for Development.
"We know that New Orleans is completely booked for the Sugar Bowl, Super Bowl and several major conventions, all slated to commence in the first days of January, and we have already sold thousands of Faberge tickets to these groups," Litwin said. "New Orleanians, however, still have time to reserve their tickets. But we recommend that they act soon because, due to our extensive marketing efforts, the remaining tickets may be limited once these several million visitors arrive in our city. Obtaining tickets couldn't be easier right now through the three means available: the NOMA box offices, charging tickets at Ticketmaster over the telephone, or buying them at any other Ticketmaster outlet."
Admission prices to Faberge in America are $ 1 0 for adults, $9 for senior citizens (age 65 and over) or for students with ID, and $5 for children ages 3 to 17. New Orleans Celebrates Mardi Gras
January 31 - February 11, 1997
The 141st annual celebration of Mardi Gras in New Orleans begins on Friday,
January 31 and culminates on Fat Tuesday, February 11. More than 60
parades are scheduled during the 12 days of merriment and madness. Last year, a record-breaking $923 million was spent during the festivities which attract several hundred-thousand visitors from around the world.
Celebrities scheduled to appear in parades this year include Jim Belushi (Tucks parade, Feb. 8), David Schwimmer (Endymion parade, Feb. 8), Tom Arnold (Bacchus parade, Feb. 9), Harry Connick Jr. and Quincy Jones (Orpheus parade, Feb. 10).
The 21st annual edition of Arthur Hardy's Mardi Gras Guide contains 160 colorful pages of facts, photos, features, and fun - including more than 60 individual parade profiles and maps. The 1997 edition also includes a history of the celebration; "FUNdamentals" - an article designed to provide newcomers with essential information about the festivities; an illustrated glossary of Mardi Gras terms; and articles on New Orleans personalities, traditions and happenings.
The 1997 Mardi Gras Guide also features an exclusive interview with Anne Rice, who shares her childhood memories of Mardi Gras in the Crescent City. Jazz great Pete Fountain penned an article for this year's Guide, which also includes a salute to the Rex parade on its 125th anniversary.

ing a farewell concert at Vieux Carre MCC on January 21st at 7:00 p.m.
