LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANAIf there is one thing homosexuals should never refer to themselves as, it is "tired." With that in mind, I'm exhausted. The Acadiana area has been the site of several functions. Please don't misunderstand, I'm grateful to have been a part of these, it's just hard to keep up with those of you who are always on the go and enjoying the night life. We've had a Debutante Ball, constant entertainment at our night clubs, Labor Day celebrations and the festivals for which our area is so noted!
I was recently a guest at the Lafayette Apollo Debutante Ball. A sincere "thank you" goes out to Jay Norris for the invitation and an evening I will not soon, if ever, forget. Besides an evening of great fun, proceeds from the function were donated to Acadiana C.A.R.E.S. and St. Luke's. It was wonderful being a part of such a worthwhile purpose.
The featured entertainment, evening wear and guest attractions were just a few of the night's excitements. Mr. & Mrs. Apollo 1998, Garrett Martin & Delicious, thank you for unbelievable entertainment. Special mentions for this grand event include: Vanda St. Claire, winner of Miss "Want-to-be" Queen Award. Great job to Mis Octavia Constantina & Lilly Mae Marganza. Mark Cosby & his escort, David Boudreaux, what a great couple! You all did such a wonderful job and obviously dedicated lots of time and thought to your ensembles. Although all of our debutantes were extraordinary, several stand out in my mind-the balloon gown, nun, Siamese twins and, although not costumed accordingly, the "fallen" star-hard to walk on heels, isn't it!
Congratulations to my friend, Patty Melt. She was the winner of the Congeniality award. My girl, Miss Patty, was definitely melted. As I stood there anticipating finally being able to view the beautiful gown which had been so diligently worked on, I noticed Miss Patty had obviously indulged in a bit of spirits. She sashayed, make that swayed, down the runway as content as you please. I hope that you all enjoyed your induction into such a wonderful krewe.
The emcees, Michael Doumit and Lady Chaten, both deserve a special applause for such a job well done. You kept us well entertained and were very successful at keeping the event moving along at just the right pace. To all of the Apollo krewe, you did a spectacular job and I look forward to next year's event. I'm also anticipating the Announcement Party for the king and queen of Apollo Lafayette to be held Oct. 17. A final note to the organizers of the Debutante Ball, thank you for booking that gorgeous prince of a male dancer who provided us with such an outstanding show.
The night still being young, I left the ball, but No, Cinderella did not leave a glass slipper behind. I entered Jules where I found yet another prince. Jules was packed and everyone was feeling very good by this time. Ron and Randy do know how to keep us satisfied. Two more male dancers, and one of them Dan, the man. There is a reason they call these guys "hard bodies." Thanks to Dan for the autographed copy of the magazine the cover of which he graces-you deserve it and much more!! Also a deep felt thank you for the incredible photo session!
The Sound Factory has been packing in crowds night after night. There are several factors, which I think attribute to this dance emporium's untouchable success. Maybe it's the nightly specials, the upbeat atmosphere or the great bartenders who bring a smile to our faces night after night. Whatever the case may be, a very sincere thanks to the club owner, John Gilland, for such an incredible place and constant entertainment! Remember when visiting Lake Charles to stop by John's club there, Crystal's, and enjoy everything this place has to offer. The man is a genius.
A visit to MoJo Monkey's and the company of Dawn and Stevie is always a great way to "cap" a wonderful evening. Once I get there it seems as though I don't remember to leave. Good music, great drinks and extraordinary people are just a few of my excuses. Since I seem to be there at that particular time, it may soon be my responsibility to turn on the lights at closing time. Don't worry girls, I think I can handle it.
For the festival-goers, I very much enjoyed the excursion. Even a lifetime resident like me is guilty of forgetting everything this area has to offer. To those of you from out of town, the Acadiana area is definitely a place you will want to make arrangements to visit soon. We pride ourselves in our hospitality and joie de vivre.
Special Mentions: Nelson, how can anyone go out and forget to drink? Troy, it's time for you to come out again. Randal, where have you been? Shelton & Mark, you two make a cute couple. Shelton, thanks for being such a good friend. Darlene, you are just too much. Patrick, hope you had a great visit. Hope to see you again soon! Robyn, not only do you sing beautifully, but you do beautiful work as well. I will call you when it's my turn.
