6th Annual "Salute To 8th District Police"
Royal St. in the French Quarter
will soon turn into a festival
of food, music and fun for the 6th Annual "Salute to the 8th District Police." This fundraiser will allow the 8th District Police to purchase additional resources to continue reducing crime in the Vieux Carre. The event will take place Sat. & Sun., Oct. 4 & 5 from 11am until 6pm in the 400 block of Royal St., adjacent to the 8th District Station.
Capt. Jerry Ursin, Commander of the Vieux Carre District, says residents and business owners in the French Quarter are the key to making this yearly event a successful one. "They are working with us to help the station buy equipment that enables us to do a better job. So far this year overall crime in the Quarter is down 36%, and we hope this event will just add to the momentum we've been able to generate." 8th District Police Officers will join French Quarter business owners and residents to man the food and beverage booths and conduct the raffle of numerous prizes, including art, antiques, dinners and hotel stays.
The following sponsors have agreed to participate: Coca-Cola, First American Title Company, First National Bank of Commerce (FNBC), French Market Corporation, Miller Beer and the Royal Street Guild. In addition, nine restaurants will comprise the food court: The Fairmont, Hard Rock Cafe, Andrew Jaeger's House of Seafood, Monteleone Hotel, New Orleans Steamboat Company, NOLA, Old N'Awlins Cookery, Red Fish Grille and the Royal Cafe.
Entertainment flanking the food court will take place on the First NBC Stage provided by: Tricou House, Pat O'Brien's, Tropical Isle, Margaritaville, Fritzel's European Jazz Pub and Riverwalk. Among the entertainers will be Barbara Bennett, Lucky Lee, The 711 Blues Band, Late As Usual, Mighty Slim & the Moodswingers, Jazz Breeze, The Riverwalk Jazz Band and Gary King & Swamp Witch.
The event is organized by the French Quarter Business Association, French Quarter Business Women's Network, French Quarter Festivals, Inc., and the Vieux Carre Property Owners, Residents and Associates, Inc.

ing a free AIDS Awareness
Seminar and Volunteer Training Workshop from 8:30am to 4:30pm on Oct. 18 & 19 at the LSU Medical Education Bldg., 1901 Perdido St. in New Orleans.
The Volunteer Training Program has traditionally been held over 2 weekends. The training format has been modified in an attempt to better meet the needs of prospective volunteers. The initial weekend will remain much the same as before, however follow-up training will be held at different times and locations which will be "area-specific."
NO/AIDS Task Force volunteers are needed in a variety of areas, including the AIDS Hotline, Buddy Program, Hospital Visitors, and HIV antibody testing. NO/AIDS-trained volunteers also work in the HIV/AIDS clinic at the Medical Center of Louisiana, group homes for people with AIDS, the Pediatric AIDS Program of Children's Hospital and other programs citywide.

LAGPAC Endorses Louis Charbonnet
For House District 98
The membership of the Louisiana Lesbian and Gay Political
Action Caucus (LAGPAC) has endorsed Louis Charbonnet for the State Representative, District 98 seat in the Sept. 27th special election. An endorsement from LAGPAC requires two-thirds of those members voting.
Louis Charbonnet is a businessman, civil rights leader and respected legislator. He was the Chair of the Labor and Industry Committee during his previous tenure as a state legislator. Charbonnet was a floor leader for New Orleans Mayors Moon Landrieu and Dutch Morial. We feel he can hit the ground running in Baton Rouge.
During the 1980's, he filed a Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights Bill indicating he is willing to champion our issues.
The District 98 seat was vacated by Garey Forster when he was appointed state Secretary of Labor recently by Governor Foster. District 98 includes the Lakefront - Gentilly area of New Orleans and runs along the lake from Bayou St. John to East New Orleans.
This will be the only item on the ballot and a very low turnout is expected. There are 1 0 candidates in the race and all predictions are for an extremely close election. This is just the kind of election where the vote of our community can have a huge effect.
If necessary, the runoff election will be held October 25th.
PrideFest 97 Massages

will show its colors in the 1997 New Orleans Pride Parade. All are welcome to join the group as it marches in the parade. Afterwards, be sure to stop by the church's booth and enjoy the benefits of a relaxing massage. Proceeds from the massages go toward the church's ministries.

Bywater Home Tour
The Bywater Neighborhood Association will present a home
tour of its unique neighborhood on Oct. 5, from 12noon to 4pm with homes open until 5pm as a fund raiser for the group.
Only minutes from the CBD and the French Quarter, a variety of homes will be open for public viewing on Sunday afternoon featuring Creole cottages, Victorian doubles, elaborate interior wall murals and vintage collections. Some homes have totally retained the historic beauty of the past, inside and out, while others show a departure from the past to contemporary interiors. Each home is a delight to see with homeowners available to answer questions.
This is a neighborhood effort to show lived-in homes, renovated or partially renovated and located in a small walking area encompassing two square blocks in the upper end of the historic Bywater neighborhood.
