Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre, 616 St. Peter St., 504.522.9958.
Sonny Borey begins his tenure as Le Petit's new artistic director with this theatrical makeover of the 1933 Warner Bros. film about a sweet young understudy who gets her big break when the star is unable to go on. With songs like "We're In The Money" and "Lullaby Of Broadway," the score is by Harry Warren and Al Dubin with (updated) book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble. This production features Mandy Zirkenbach as Peggy Sawyer, the understudy, Susan Domangue as Dorothy Brock, the star, with Ken Risch as Julian Marsh, the director, Peggy's love interest, Billy Lawler, played by Patrick Mendelson and Jimmy Murphy plays Dorothy's old flame, actor Pat Denning. Karen Hebert is the choreographer; Bill Walker, set and lighting designer; Derek Franklin, music director, Jay Haydel conducts the orchestra. Timing Carl Walker directs David Ives' collection of seven one-act comedies, all of which involve some aspect of timing, from a dinner date in which the datees get to change what they say to one another, to a scientific study that has monkeys typing Hamlet, to a play about Trotsky with a hatchet in his head. The cast includes Danny Bowen, Eva Earls, Tari Hohn Lagasse, Gavin Mahlie, Doug Mittlestaedt & Rebecca Taliancich. Prevew performances Thurs.-Sat., Oct.1, 2, 3, at 6pm; Opens Sat., Oct. 3, 9pm. ANNIE

The touring production of this Tony award-winning musical of 1977, based on the popular cartoon strip, with book by Thomas Meehan, lyrics by Martin Charnin (who also directs), music by Charles Strouse ("Tomorrow"), and choreography by Peter Gennero, returns to New Orleans after only a short hiatus as a non-subscription special. Starring Sally Struthers as Miss Hannigan, Brittny Kissinger as the red-headed moppet and Conrad John Schuck as Daddy Warbucks. ANYTHING GOES

This Cole Porter musical, with book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman, all about gangsters and true love on board a 20's ocean liner, kicks off the season. Directed and choreographed by Alton Geno, it features Ann Casey as Reno Sweeney, with Kris Shaw, Kasey Marino, Walter Bost, Stephen LaDow, Amanda Norman-Rucker, Ashley Smetherman and Linda Hubschen. Jan Schluter is music director, while Robert Self does the ship set, Daniel Zimmer lights it and Trish McLain creates the period gard. Charles Ward produces. Carl Walker's hit revue showcasing the music and mores of the '70's, after a summer long stint at the CAC, crosses the lake for a limited engagement, with the original cast: Anthony Bailey, Eddie Colins, Randy Juneau, Charlotte Lang, Cynthia Owen, Dorian Rush and Danon Smith. Jack Fowler is musical director; Roy Haylock and Charlotte Lang designed the wild and glitzy costumes; and, Ron Williams, the day-glo scenery. Fri., 8pm and Sat., 5 & 8pm, thru Oct. 10.

GLORIA DUPLEX: An Erotic Worship Service for Theatre

Swine Palace Productions presents the southern premiere of this cabaret-style play by Lousiana native and LSU aluma, Rebecca Wells. Set in New Orleans, it follows the life of Gloria Tom Duplex who is hired to perform in the Kitten Paradise Temple and Lounge. Full of song, dance, prayer, preaching and music, it is directed by Barry Kyle, with sets by Dawn Dedeaux and music directed by Andre DuBroc. The cast features Shelly Reynolds as Gloria with Russell Hodgkinson, Tea Molina, Latangela Sherman & Jennifer Joyner. Tues. - Sat., 7:30pm; Sat. & Sun., 2pm, thru Oct. 18.

Part of the CAC's Performance Support Program, Ta-Dah Productions, Inc. (Cathie Weinstein) presents the New Orleans premiere of this haunting tale of a "quintessential Englishwoman determined to forget the traumas of her youth in pre-war Nazi Germany. Written by Diane Samuels, John Grimsley designs and directs Joan Blum, Lois Cradell, Courtney Bailey, Hope Weiss, & Bob Edes, Jr., with child musicians Perry Tsai, Genevieve Tolzdorf & David Bordson-Bozzo. MFA directing candidate Alan Walter directs Sam Shepard's stunning examination of the peculiar characters who inhabit the underworld of the horse-racing industry, inaugurating LSU Theatre's 1998-1999 season. Oct. 3, 7:30pm & 1:30pm.

JPAS begins the season with highlights and fireworks from some of the greatest moments in opera by Italy's revered master, Giuseppe Verdi, with selections from such grand spectacles as Macbeth, La Forza del Destino, I Lombardi, Nabucco, & Don Carlos plus the triumphal Grand March from Aida. BALLET HISPANICO

The New Orleans Ballet Association begins the season with this pre-eminent Hispanic dance company under the direction of Venezuelan Tina Ramirez. Its innovative repertory blends ballet, modern and ethnic dance with the rhythms, music and color of the Spanish speaking world to create a spirited image of contemporary Hispanic-American culture. Sat., Oct. 24, 8pm.

HAIR

Enterprising director Timothy Baker revives this 60's musical precurser to the European pop-operas that dominated the musical theatre in the 80s. Written by Galt MacDermot, Gerome Ragni and James Rado, this rock opera revisits the turbulent, anti-war 60s. Oct. 15-18, 21-25. Evenings at 8pm, Sun., 2pm.

LOUISIANA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

The orchestra continues its Classics season with a concert entitled "Honoring Israel." Klauspeter Seibel conducts, with the Symphony Chorus of New Orleans, Amy Lawrence, soprano & David Goldstein, narrator, Bernstein's Symphony No. 3 (Kaddish), honoring the 50th Anniversary of Israel's Creation; also, Brahms' Symphony No. 4. The New Orleans Opera Association begins its 56th season with Camille Saint-Saens' account of these two decieving and manipulative lovers. Russian mezzo soprano Irina Mishura returns to New Orleans to assay Dalila, tenor Mark Lundberg makes his New Orleans debut as Samson, Jay Lesenger directs and Canadian Pierre Hetu conducts the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Oct. 14 & 17, 8pm.
