Stylists Invited to Let Down Their Hair at Hairraiser IV Kick-off
Belladonna Day Spa will host
the first of a three-part benefit
for NO/AIDS Task Force Monday, March 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. as hair stylists and salon owners gather to kick off the Fourth Annual HairRaiser. The spa is located at 2900 Magazine St.
Hairraiser IV will take place Sunday and Monday, April 6 and 7. Participating salons will open for business on one of these days, and donate the day's proceeds from hair cuts, perms, manicures and other beauty services to NO/AIDS Task Force. Last year, nearly 30 salons and their clients raised $30,000 to support the agency's programs and services. Al) metro area hair salons am invited to participate.
At the kick-off party March 10, salon representatives will be able to sign up for Hairraiser and take the event supplies they will need, including appointment cards, buttons and donation boxes. The event is open to all interested hair stylists and salon owners in the metro area.
HairRaiser will be capped by a cocktail/fashion show Sunday, April 13 at The Eiffel Tower. The theme for this year's show is an "Evening in Paris" and features a fashion show of sophisticated evening wear, delicious hors d'oeuvres and cocktails. Tickets are $50 for reserved seating and $25 for general admission; tickets will be available for sale to the general public.
Dr. Bill Brandon and Tedd Ellison are co-chairing the event, along with honorary Chair Charmaine Neville.
Mac Membership
The Mayor's Advisory Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual
and Transgender Issues is seeking people who are interested in serving on the Committee. Members must live in New Orleans, be at least 18 years old and demonstrate familiarity with and support of Community Issues. Members must also serve on one sub-committee. The MAC meets once a month at City Hall. Committees meet as it is necessary.
Currently, the MAC is involved in efforts to update the state's police training manual to include sensitivity training for state police and the NOPD. Also, the MAC has presented New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial with a package of proposed legislation concerning Hate Crimes and Employment Discrimination. The Mayor is expected to ad these bills to his legislative package for the upcoming session of the Legislature.
People who are interested in joining the MAC should call MAC Chair Robert Udick at 527.6387. African-Americans, Asian-Americans and Hispanic citizens are especially encouraged to apply. The next MAC meeting is 5:30 PM, Tuesday, March llth at City Hall.

ana Leather 1997 is Melvin Knight (who assumes the position from Michael Caster). Melvin will represent the organization in Chicago Memorial Day weekend at the 1997 International Mr. Leather contest.
Lords of Leather also announces that the Fourteenth Annual Carnival Ball entitled "Before the Fire" held on Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997, raised $2400. for charity and will be distributed between United Services for AIDS Foundation, Shelter Resources, Project Lazarus and Buzzy's (aka William J. Fanning Foundation).
The new board for the 97-'98 Ball year is Captain, Danny Alford; Ball Lieutenant, Ernie O'Steen; Function Lt., Christian Kean-Johnson; President, George Hester; Vice President, Neil Gordon; Treasurer, Jared Campo; and, Secretary, Jamie Temple.

nounce the opening of "Meditative Reflections," a show of works by Chrysantha Wijeya-singha on Saturday, March 8, 1997 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
From Hindu gods to Mardi Gras queens, Chrysantha's series of faces draws one into a world where New Orleans extravagance meets the rich and colorful traditions of his own South Asian culture. These provocative paintings confront, charm and ultimately seduce the viewer with a mixture of detached grandeur and mysterious passion.
"I'm trying to marry two cultures-South Asian and New Orleans," says Chrysantha. "Since moving here in 1994, my imagination has been. inspired by the vibrant colors and visual delights all around me. There is much here in a flamboyant way that reminds me of the classical traditions that I grew up with."
Chrysantha was born in Kandy, Sri Lanka. He immigrated to the United States eventually settling in the San Francisco Bay area where he completed his degree in South Asian history and art, and where he was represented by a number of top galleries. Included in the exhibit will be two stupas, elaborate ceramic sculptures that can serve as inspirational shrines. This will be the public premiere of his works in New Orleans.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of artwork from this show will be donated to the Community Center by the artist. The Community Center is located at 816 North Rampart Street; call 504.522.1103 to confirm daily exhibit hours. The show will run through April 6, 1997.
