There will be a Two for One party
Saturday, April 19, from 4 to 7
pm at Cosimo's Bar, corner of Gov. Nicholls & Burgundy: a bon voyage party for Ms. Dixie, Pat & Sylvia combined with the fourth annual Galley House Reunion. All well drinks & domestic beer (excluding Abita) will be two for one as well.
The two parties are being sponsored by the Krewe of Petronius, Hank from the bank and Cosimo's Bar.
This will be Ms. Dixie's first transcontinental excursion, after 87 years in the good old U.S. of A. "First we take the Concorde to London, then we go to Paris and we sail back on the QEII. Figured I'd better do it while I still can!" joked the legendary doyen of French Quarter gay bar owners, whose style, wit and spryness belie her years.
Hank Ranna, aka Hank from the Bank has been holding his Galley House Reunions now for four years. For all you young'uns, the Galley House, also known affectionately as the Wrinkle Room, was located on the corner of Toulouse and Chartres St. and was a much-beloved gay watering hole in the 50's, 60's & 70's.
Dreams And Fantasies Of Latin America-
Photographs Debut At The Community Center
The Lesbian and Gay Community Center is proud to announce the opening of "Dreams and Fantasies of Latin America," a show of photographs by Lorry Salcedo-Mitrani on Saturday, April 12, 1997 from 6:30-8:30 pm.
In poses both playful and sensual, award-winning photographer Lorry Salcedo captures the male form with wit, passion and flair. Continuing a tradition that includes Robert Mapplethorpe and George Dureau, Salcedo combines technical virtuosity and a daring aesthetic to produce images that challenge and ultimately seduce the viewer. Some are playfully erotic, some evince a lyrical soulful quality, while others present a Felliniesque view of the world. Yet all demonstrate clearly Salcedo's mastery of his craft and his art.
Born in Peru, Lorry most recently visited New Orleans last fall for an exhibition of his ethnographic works at Tulane's Latin American Studies Library. Thirty of these were acquired at that time by Tulane for their permanent archives. His images are also in the permanent collection of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the New York Public Library's Shomburg Center for Research. Lorry currently lives in New York, but will be here for the opening of his show at the Community Center.
Lorry's photographs have won prizes in the Armand Hammer Photographic Contest, the Marc Ferrez Contest and Unesco's Worldwide Selected Photographer's Contest, among others. He has exhibited in Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Houston and has had one-man shows in Lima, Peru, New York, Dallas and at the Peruvian Embassy in Washington, D.C. He has received a grant for international residency in Brazil from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Foundation, and has just returned from Peru where he was working on his newest series of photographs.
Shot in Peru and Brazil, "Dreams and Fantasies of Latin America," a portfolio of sixteen limited edition, black and white images, will have its debut at New Orleans' Lesbian and Gay Community Center. Salcedo's distinguished book, Africa's Legacy-Photographs in Brazil and Peru, with a preface by the Talking Heads' David Byrne, will also be available for sale.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for our city and, in particular, the gay and lesbian community to appreciate Lorry's talents," says Brian Sands, LGCC's Art Director. "At the same time, due to Lorry's generosity, it is an ideal way to give the Center much-needed support."
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of artwork from this show will be donated to the Community Center by the artist. The Community Center is located at 816 North Rampart Street; call 504.522.1103 to confirm daily exhibit hours. The show will run through June 8, 1997.
LAGPAC Endorsements
for April 5 Special Election
The Louisiana Lesbian and Gay
Political Action Caucus
(LAGPAC) announces its candidate endorsements for the Special Election to be held April 5 in Orleans Parish.
In the race for Traffic Court Judge, LAGPAC endorses State Rep. Arthur Morrell.
"A close race is expected in this election where there are only two remaining candidates. Rep. Morrell has stood up for lesbian and gay issues in Baton Rouge, including co-authoring and speaking for the Hate Crimes Bill," said Political Action Committee Chair Jan Harrell.
In the District 6 School Board Election, LAGPAC endorses incumbent William Bowers.
"Bill Bowers, as former chair of the Human Relations Commission of New Orleans, has demonstrated insight and ideas for implementing policies of concern to lesbians and gay men," said LAGPAC Co-chair Christopher Daigle.
Bowers faces four other candidates. If a run-off is necessary, it will be held on May 3.

Annual Fiesta D'Mayo
The Krewe of Petronius' 10th
Annual Fiesta D'Mayo will
be held Sunday, May 18, from 1 pm at MRB, 515 St. Philip St.
For a mere $5 one may partake of an all-you-can-eat Mexican buffet, and enjoy a musical extravaganza featuring noted local performers and a special appearance of "Muscles In Action," beefy strippers from Texas. The krewe will also raffle off a color TV, a VCR and a portable telephone.
This year's Fiesta is under the direction of the Spring Lieutenant, the infamous Ms. Fly, the queen of the Financial District, who encourages everyone to come and be Mexican for a day.
"You might even want to join our crazy group and take part in our 1998 Mardi Gras ball, which promises to be the best ever!" said Ms. Fly.
